2023 Digital Marketing Forecast: What Marketers Need To Know

April 25, 20236 min read

The digital marketing landscape is ever-changing, with new technologies and strategies emerging at a breakneck pace. It is, therefore, imperative for marketers to stay abreast of the latest industry trends.

In this blog, we’ll explore three key areas of digital marketing that are expected to be especially impactful in 2023:

2023 Digital Marketing Forecast: What Marketers Need To Know
  • Statistics and Trends in 2023 That Are Shaping the Digital Landscape

  • The Growing Importance of Brand Ambassadors and Influencers

  • The Emergence of ChatGPT as a Game Changer for Marketers

1 - 2023 Digital Landscape Statistics and Trends

The following headlines and statistics define the current state of digital in 2023:

  • By November 15, 2022, the world’s population had surpassed 8 billion and reached 8.01 billion by the beginning of 2023. Over 57% of the global population resides in urban areas.

  • As of early 2023, there are 5.44 billion mobile phone users globally, representing 68% of the total population. Unique mobile users have risen by just over 3% in the past year, with 168 million new users added in the past 12 months.

  • Presently, there are 5.16 billion internet users worldwide, meaning that 64.4% of the total population is now online. While the global internet user total rose by 1.9% over the past year, delays in data reporting imply that actual growth is likely to be higher than this figure indicates.

  • Social media users worldwide have reached 4.76 billion, equivalent to nearly 60% of the global population. However, social media user growth has slowed in recent months, with this year’s net addition of 137 million new users equating to an annual growth rate of just 3%.

Implications for Digital Marketing

The statistics and trends shaping the digital landscape have significant implications for digital marketing, offering businesses the potential to connect with a vast global audience through a variety of channels:

  • The increasing urbanization of the global population could mean businesses with a local focus may need to adapt their marketing strategies to reach audiences in urban areas better. Some strategies include leveraging geolocation-based advertising or focusing on content that resonates with urban consumers.

  • With over two-thirds of the global population now using mobile phones, digital marketers must ensure that the websites, content, and advertising we’re creating are mobile-friendly and optimized for various devices.

  • While social media still represents a vast audience, the slowing growth rate suggests that businesses may need to be more strategic in their social media efforts to stand out in an increasingly crowded marketplace. For example, they could invest in more targeted advertising, build strong relationships with influential social media users, or explore emerging social media platforms.

2 - The Growing Importance of Brand Ambassadors and Influencers

As companies adapt to the changing digital landscape and the limitations imposed by the cookie and data-tracking tools, brand ambassadors and influencers are set to play an increasingly important role in 2023. In fact, according to Influencer Marketing Benchmark Report 2023, over 80% of brand marketers planned to allocate a budget to influencer marketing.

With influencers able to tap into their niche audiences and offer a more personal touch than traditional ads, they have become a powerful tool for businesses seeking to boost brand authenticity and connect with their target markets. So by partnering with brand ambassadors and influencers, companies can benefit from their trusted recommendations and build long-lasting relationships with their customers.

What Does This Mean for Marketers?

To stay competitive and deliver effective campaigns for our clients, we must:

  • have a deep understanding of how to identify and engage with the right influencers for our clients’ target audiences

  • be adept at crafting strategies that leverage the power of influencer marketing while also aligning with our clients’ overall brand messaging and business goals

  • stay up-to-date on the latest trends and best practices in influencer marketing to ensure we can provide clients with the best possible advice and support

By doing so, we can position ourselves as valuable partners to our clients, helping them navigate the rapidly changing digital landscape and achieve their marketing objectives.

3 - The Emergence of ChatGPT as a Game Changer for Marketers

The public release of ChatGPT has generated a lot of excitement recently. It is a compelling example of artificial intelligence (AI) in action, sparking interest and even concerns about its potential impact. However, no one could argue: ChatGPT demonstrates the current capabilities of AI and its potential for the future.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a chatbot that utilizes natural language processing (NLP) to generate novel content. It is an exemplar of generative AI that is powered by a large language model produced by OpenAI. The training dataset encompasses a massive collection of books, newspapers, research papers, and an extensive snapshot of the internet.

chatgpt

A powerful tool that could change how marketers approach advertising and customer service, ChatGPT can be used to generate natural-sounding conversations with customers, providing quick and accurate responses to their inquiries. This could help businesses improve customer experience and streamline customer service operations.

 So…Will ChatGPT Replace Human Marketers?

While ChatGPT may be a game changer for marketers, it is unlikely to replace humans entirely as we will still need to use our creativity and critical thinking skills to develop effective marketing strategies. ChatGPT operates on the premise that its content is derived from its comprehension of previously written material. Thus, it lacks the capacity for independent thought or creativity comparable to humans. Additionally, human involvement will be necessary to oversee ChatGPT’s responses and ensure they align with the company’s branding and messaging.

Instead of being a replacement for marketers, ChatGPT will likely be a valuable tool for us. It can help automate certain tasks, freeing time for more important and creative endeavors. For example, ChatGPT could be used to handle routine customer inquiries, allowing marketers to focus on developing more personalized and effective marketing campaigns.

How Will ChatGPT Impact Marketers?

Overall, ChatGPT has the potential to revolutionize the way we marketers approach our work, but it will not replace the power of the human touch — the authenticity and connection elements of the marketer’s work cannot be replicated by a machine.

But it goes without saying that marketers willing to embrace and integrate this technology into their work will be better positioned to succeed in the digital age.

Final Words

As history has shown us through periods of rapid technological advancements, such as the industrial revolution and the computer age, the ones who thrive are those that effectively work alongside technology and embrace the trends. Therefore, we should leverage technology’s capabilities to aid us while we nurture and utilize our distinctive human characteristics.

After spending several months reviewing multiple proposals from several different companies we engaged LOJO to develop a new website that represents our company effectively. We worked initially with Stephen Platte who helped create the scope of the project. Stephen was knowledgeable and always followed up with me on time and as promised.

He "closed the deal" for LOJO with his professionalism, service orientation and easy going approach. Once we signed the contract we were introduced to Jay Kelly who would be the creative lead for LOJO. This was the most challenging part of the project for my company, as there was no shortage of ideas from our side. Jay managed the project flawlessly, and once we had all agreed to the design, Jay introduced us to Eric.

Eric Lay is one of the founders of LOJO. Eric took the design we had developed and brought it to life. We delivered content as quickly as he requested it. Eric kept the project on task and we responded by exceeding every deadline for content. In turn, once provided, literally not a day went by that Eric didn't add the content and take the next step. In just a few weeks we launched our new website. Eric is a pleasure to work with.

His positive attitude and consultative approach really enhanced the experience and made a big difference for us in the outcome of our project. We would welcome you to visit our website to take a look at the quality work of LOJO. We are very pleased with LOJO and look forward to working with them in the future as we pursue an aggressive SEO strategy."
